Katie Couric has an amazing interview with Jennifer Lopez on Friday’s episode of her new, nationally-syndicated talk show Katie.
Jennifer talks about it all: Much-younger boyfriend Casper Smart, ex-husband Marc Anthony — and the new crop of American Idol judges. Below is a preview of Friday’s episode:
Jennifer Lopez on her relationship with ex-husband Marc Anthony:
KC: Having said that, do they [Jennifer’s twins Max and Emme] spend time with their dad [Marc Anthony]?
JL: Of course.
KC: Marc Anthony
JL: Yes, they’re really close with him. They were with him last night.
KC: And I know divorce is tough.
JL: Ugh.
KC: How are you guys doing in terms of your relationship?
JL: We’re doing good. We’re proud of that. We’re proud of how we’ve kind of handled this. It was a really tough decision to make. And in your heart you know it’s always going to affect you. You know you never want to break up a family. That wasn’t my dream. My dream was for us to always be together, but things don’t work out and you feel like it’s the better choice. If I didn’t feel like it was the better choice then I wouldn’t have done it you know? We’re doing good. We love our kids and we have love for each other and we always will. We’re friends. We were friends before and we’re friends now.
KC: Which is great.
JL: Thank god that didn’t change.
Jennifer Lopez on her biggest insecurity, singing:
JL: I think the biggest insecurity I have is with singing…because people criticized my voice…
KC: Was that hard, by the way?
JL: Yes.
KC: When people would take shots at you for that?
JL: Oh my god, yeah. Because it creates more insecurity. You know and so for a long time I didn’t believe in myself that way.
JL: And I have to say Marc [Anthony] was very integral because I always had such respect for his voice, his singing voice and he’s one of the most phenomenal singers. He always told me, he’s like “You have an amazing voice it’s just a confidence thing with you. You got to let it out.” And now that I’m singing live and every night you realize…you have to give yourself credit sometimes and go, ‘You know what? So many millions of albums later, you shouldn’t care about what people think.”
Jennifer Lopez on her relationship with current boyfriend/choreographer Casper Smart:
KC: You’ve been in a relationship with your choreographer?
JL: Yes.
KC: Casper Smart who I understand likes to be called Beau?
JL: Yes.
KC: But you call him, do you call him Bear?
JL: I call him Beau.
KC: Do you call him Beau?
JL: Oh, Bear! No, you know, Bear it’s just because he’s like a bit of a bear.
KC: Yeah. What was it about him that caught your eye? I mean…I think it’s kind of obvious.
JL: Honestly he’s a very smart and outgoing person you know and I don’t know we just kind of hit it. Wasn’t something I was looking for, trust me, at all. But you know things happen and they happen naturally.
KC: Do you work?
JL: That’s the best thing.
KC: I know that you’ve said you don’t like bad boys, you like the good guys. You like nice people?
JL: Well I did used to like the bad boys. Eh, but now I realize that’s not a winning formula.
KC: Yeah.
JL: It takes time to get there you know.
KC: Yeah.
JL: We do these things, you know we’re just trying to get it right just like everybody else.
Jennifer Lopez on dating a younger man:
KC: This is a sensitive area for me because been there done that, but he [Casper Smart] is 18 years younger.
JL: Yes he is.
KC: How do you feel about the age difference?
JL: It’s hard for me to think about my age. Do you know what I mean? Because I don’t feel any different than when I first started. I feel very youthful and I feel very comfortable in my own skin. And it’s funny until somebody brings it up, I don’t think we really think about it. I do in the sense that I’m always thinking about what’s right and all that kind of stuff but at the same time, you know we’re just two people who have similar interests and love a lot of the same things and who—get along.
Jennifer Lopez on the new rumored “American Idol” judges:
KC: What do you think about the new group of judges, I think they’ve announced that?
JL: Did they announce?
KC: Yeah, I think it’s going to be…
JL: Who is it?
KC: Mariah Carey, you know, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy [Jackson]. Randy’s back.
JL: Randy is! Oh thank god. I love Randy. I’m glad he’s doing it.
KC: What do you think of that group? That’s sort of interesting, don’t you think?
JL: That’s an eclectic group.
KC: Yeah!
JL: Yeah it is.
KC: I’m glad. I think it will be fun to have Keith Urban there.
JL: I think they all have something really different to offer so it should be interesting.
